How to know if a 200-hour teacher training is right for you

Most people who write to us about the 200-hour teacher training aren’t sure they want to teach at all, they want to go deeper, and teaching is the form that depth is usually sold in. That’s a fine reason to apply, but it helps to know what the training actually is before you commit two hundred hours of your life to it, wherever in the world you find it.

What the hours are actually spent on

A real 200-hour training is not two hundred hours of asana. Ours splits the time across classical Hatha technique, pranayama, anatomy, yogic philosophy, and — the part most programs shortchange, real teaching practice, where you stand in front of your batch and lead. You leave able to explain why a posture works, not just perform it, which is the actual difference between a strong practitioner and a teacher.

Signs it’s the right time

You don’t need years of practice or a flexible body, depth over speed means the training meets you where you are. What matters more is whether you’re free to give it your full attention, in whichever format you choose, and whether you’re drawn to the philosophy and not just the postures. If you’re chasing a certificate to add to a resume without wanting to sit with the material, you’ll find the pace here frustrating rather than fulfilling.

Residential or live online

Training in Rishikesh, residentially, gives you the immersion, small batches, daily correction, and the surrounding culture the practice came from. The live online weekday/weekend format exists for people who can’t leave their job or family for weeks at a time, and covers the same eight modules at a pace that fits around a normal week. Neither is a lesser version of the other; they’re built for different lives.

You don’t have to decide today

Read through what a training day actually involves, look at both formats, and let the decision take the time it needs, most people who are ready for a 200-hour training already sense it before they’ve read a single page.

Compare the 200-hour Hatha Yoga TTC and the Meditation Teacher Training, or start with an overview of both trainings to see which one matches where you are.
