What the breath can teach us

Yoga in the West usually begins with the body. Yoga in the tradition begins with the breath — because the breath is the one function of the body that is both automatic and voluntary, the hinge between what we can control and what controls us. Learn to work that hinge and you have a tool that works everywhere: on the mat, in traffic, in grief, in sleeplessness.

The breath is a mirror

Watch your breath the next time you read a difficult email. It shortens, lifts into the chest, sometimes stops entirely. The mind and the breath move together — the yogis observed this millennia before physiology could explain it. Which means the mirror works both ways: if agitation shortens the breath, a deliberately long, slow breath settles agitation. You cannot always calm the mind directly. You can almost always slow the breath.

Three practices to begin with

Watching (breath awareness). Sit comfortably and change nothing. Simply feel the breath at the nostrils for two or three minutes. This sounds like nothing; it is the foundation of everything, because it teaches the mind to rest on a single moving object.

Lengthening the exhale. Breathe in for a comfortable count — say four — and out for six or eight. The long exhale engages the body’s rest response directly; it is the fastest reliable way we know to move from stress toward steadiness. Five minutes before sleep changes nights.

Even breathing (sama-vṛtti). In for four, out for four, smooth and silent, breathing through the nose. Practiced daily, this steadies the baseline — the mind you bring to everything else.

Learn the deeper practices with a teacher

Beyond these foundations lie the classical prāṇāyāmas — alternate-nostril breathing, kapālabhāti, bhastrikā — and the kriyās that work with breath and energy together. These are best learned in person, where a teacher can watch and adjust you; they are taught daily in our classes, on retreats, and in depth during the 200-hour teacher training. The breath will teach you for the rest of your life. All it asks is that you begin by listening.
