Almost every packing question we get boils down to the same worry: guests picture either a five-star resort or a bare monastery, and pack for the wrong one. An ashram retreat needs less than a resort and more forgiveness than a monastery. Here’s what actually earns a place in the bag.
Clothing — modest, layered, and a little worn-in
Loose, breathable clothing that covers shoulders and knees works for both practice and temple areas, so you rarely need to change outfits between them. Because mornings begin well before sunrise, pack at least one warm layer even outside the coldest months — a shawl earns its space in every season. Skip anything precious; floors get sat on, and dust is part of ashram life.
What the season actually decides
October to February is the most popular stretch to visit, with mornings and evenings dropping to a genuinely cold 12°C even as afternoons reach a comfortable 30°C — pack for both ends of that swing, not the average. March through May runs hot, 30–40°C, so light natural fabrics matter more than layers. June through September brings the monsoon: humid, lush, and worth a proper rain layer if you’re visiting then.

Practice essentials
A yoga mat if you have a favorite, most programs provide one, but preferences run deep. A reusable water bottle, since the ashram runs on filtered refill stations rather than plastic. Slip-on sandals you don’t mind removing constantly; shoes come off before every hall and temple space here.
What to leave behind
Valuables you’d hate to lose track of, a packed schedule of sightseeing to squeeze in around practice, and if you can manage it, the expectation of constant connectivity. Guests consistently tell us the thing they didn’t pack, a full phone-free day, ends up being the most valuable part of the trip.
One last practical note
Confirm your visa category before you book flights, most yoga and retreat stays fall under standard tourist e-visa rules, but it’s worth checking against your specific trip length. Once travel is sorted, see planning a visit for arrival details, or browse current residential retreats in Rishikesh to find your dates.
